Discover Brandenburg’s hidden history — medieval streets, royal power, the Dominsel and stories you won’t find in every guidebook.
Step away from the usual tourist routes and discover Brandenburg an der Havel, one of the oldest and most historically fascinating cities in the region. During this 4-hour walking tour, we explore the historic heart of Brandenburg — from the medieval old town to the Neustadt and the atmospheric Dominsel (Cathedral Island). Along the way, you will discover how the city developed from a Slavic settlement into an important medieval centre and later became part of the history of Prussia and modern Germany. This tour combines impressive architecture with stories about the people and events that shaped the city — including some of the darker chapters of the 20th century. The itinerary We start at Nikolaiplatz and explore the historic Old Town before continuing towards the Neustadt and the Dominsel. Highlights include: * Nikolaiplatz and The Euthanasia Museum, dedicated to the victims of Nazi “euthanasia” crimes and the history of the former Brandenburg killing centre * Altstädtisches Rathaus and the historic centre * Alter Markt * Medieval churches and historic town houses * The Neustadt (New Town) and its historic landmarks * The historic Steintorturm area * The impressive Dominsel (Cathedral Island) with the oldest Brandenburg Cathedral and its surroundings * Historic views of the Havel and the city's islands The itinerary can be adapted to the interests of the group and to opening hours or temporary restrictions. History beyond the postcard Brandenburg an der Havel offers much more than beautiful medieval architecture. The tour also addresses the difficult history of the Nazi period and the Brandenburg killing centre, making the Euthanasia Museum an important and thought-provoking part of the experience.
